Review the Method for Calculating the Energy Price Cap

Petition Details

Consider the benefits of applying a 'volume pricing' model which is linked to council tax bands, for example:

Additional Information

Those living in council tax band F, are charged 5p per kWh per month for the first 500 kwh, increasing to 7p per kWh per month, for the next 250 kwh, increasing to 9p per kWh per month for the next 250 kwh..... etc

Those living in council tax band H, are charged 9p per kWh per month for the first 500 kwh, increasing to 12p per kWh per month, for the next 250 kwh, increasing to 15p per kWh per month for the next 250 kwh..... etc

This method of pricing rewards those who use less encouraging people to reduce consumption, and it allows those whose assets indicate they can afford more, to subsidise those whose assets indicate they may struggle.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

The energy price cap is set by Ofgem, not the Government or Parliament, but we could accept a petition calling on the Government to give Ofgem powers to set a variable price cap based on usage, rather than a fixed price cap.
