Increase the number of paid positions for Counsellors within the NHS.
Counselling has a proven history of improving measures of wellbeing for a range of Issues. Typically Counselling is not offered as a first line treatment within the NHS. If it is offered, it is subject to extreme delays and/or requires additional payment from the patient.
Although the NHS aims to offer choice when it comes to treatment. Psychological services shy away from modalities that emphasize an individuals subjective experience, circumstance and history.
Instead, an individual's experience is seen as secondary to their symptoms, and the treatment modalities offered focus on symptom mitigation, i.e. CBT, psychotropic medications.
This bypasses the opportunity the individual to gain self awareness, self understanding and self compassion.
