Require LPAs hold referendums on support for onshore renewables by April 2024
Every local planning authority (LPA) should be required to have a referendum on whether their constituents support onshore renewables, so the results can inform local plans/policy immediately, and help give certainty to energy companies wanting to deploy renewable technologies.
Despite an energy crisis, largely subsidy-free delivery, public opinion polls showing support, debunking of health concerns and noise reduction from innovation, there is still significant resistance to onshore renewables such as wind and many councils block planning applications for onshore renewables.
We believe requiring referendums across the country, to gauge support for onshore renewables, should help make sure LPA policy better reflects the will of the people.
