Remove requirements to display calories on menus
I am asking the Government to remove requirements to list calorie counts on menus in cafes and restaurants. I understand the desire to tackle the obesity crisis and think nutritional information should be available, but not forced upon every person who eats in a restaurant or cafe.
Around 1.2 million people in the UK struggle with an eating disorder. Many of us will have friends and family members who have been impacted, and seeing the calories written in front of them may trigger them.
By removing the requirement to list calorie information of menu items, we can enable those struggling option to preserve their mental health, helping to reduce the pressure on NHS mental health services. By requiring this information be displayed to all, we believe the Government is only inviting the pressure to grow further.
