Change the law to ban daily standing charges

Petition Details

To introduce a law banning daily standing charges that companies charge customers to increase profits.

Additional Information

The use of standing charges to have and access essential services before any use and then charge unaffordable prices on usage is profiteering at consumers expense. To justify standing charges necessary for the maintainance of the service and its infrastructure is disgusting when making record profits that benefit shareholders rather than investing profits back into the upkeep of there own company instead this cost is made negligible to the company by being unfairly passed on to the customer.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

Decisions about standing charges are a matter for utility providers and Ofgem, not the UK Government or Parliament.

The price cap is a cap on a unit of gas and electricity, with standing charges taken into account. Find out more about the energy price cap, including how it includes standing charges, here: www.ofgem.gov.uk/check-if-energy-price-cap-affects-you
