Petition Action

Require businesses to pay employees more for working a bank holiday

Petition Details

As a retail worker whose hours are already very long and demanding, bank Holidays are some of the only days where my whole family can spend time together. It therefore doesn't seem fair that when I have to work those days, my employer provides me with no additional pay or benefits.

Additional Information

This requirement would provide a stronger incentive for non-essential retailers to close on bank Holidays. Should a business choose to stay open, employees would be well-compensated for giving up the chance to spend valuable time with family and friends.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Any decision to pay employees more for working on a bank holiday is a contractual matter between employers, their employees, and the relevant trade union(s) if applicable. This means the UK Government is not directly responsible for the action this petition calls for.

You could have a petition calling for all businesses to be required to close on bank holidays, if that is something you'd like to see happen.
