Petition Action

Reclassify accompanied resident U.K. family pets returning to U.K. on flights

Petition Details

Accompanied resident U.K. family pets returning to U.K are classed as cargo, charged associated cargo costs + vet fee. Pet owners are also required to use the services of pet travel agents due to the complexity of a pet travelling as Cargo. These costs are estimated to be in the region of £1000+

Additional Information

Pets travelling from U.K. to EU countries, are classed as checked baggage and charged checked baggage fee. Pet travel documents and health certificates are checked as part of routine owner’s check in procedures. Vaccinated pets with valid health certificate do not require vet examination without compromising necessary animal welfare and bio security laws. Pet travel to EU can cost as little as £125. Modify U.K. pet travel laws in order to reduce costs and make travel easier.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

Decisions about the charges airlines apply for pets are a matter for individual airlines, not the UK Government or Parliament.

We have published the following petition, which you might like to sign:

Let airlines allow pets in the airplane’s cabin to and from the UK: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/602544
