Petition Action

Require all pregnant women to be offered APS 'sticky blood' testing

Petition Details

The Government should require all pregnant women to be offered testing for Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), also known as ‘sticky blood’, by their 9 week appointment at the latest.

Additional Information

On 1st March 2022 I gave birth to my stillborn daughter, Valentina, I was 26 weeks pregnant. I was recently asked to go into the hospital to have a blood test for ‘sticky blood’. I was told although ‘rare’ this could be a cause for us losing Valentina. Why does it take us losing a baby to have this?
At least 15% of miscarriages are thought to happen because of undiagnosed APS. It can cause pre-eclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction which eventually may lead to an early/ late miscarriage and stillbirth. It shouldn’t take the worst to happen for this test to be done! Why would you not do everything possible to prevent families going through the worst thing in life and lose their babies?
