Allow friends as emergency proxy voters
Allow friends and unwed partners to complete each other’s proxy votes. As a disabled student, if I cannot get to a polling station on Election Day, I cannot vote as I have no close relatives within my jurisdiction.
For years the government has been making it harder and harder for young people to vote, particularly those of student age. The ruling of only close relatives being allowed as proxy voters directly affects vulnerable and disabled students, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. By allowing non relatives to be proxy voters, everyone who wants to vote can vote.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Anyone can act as a proxy for voting, provided they are are registered to vote, are allowed to vote in the type of election taking place, and can vote in the polling station stated on your poll card.
