Create an offence of ‘causing serious injury by careless driving’.
I would like the government to consider creating an offence of ‘causing serious injury by careless driving’, whereby those convicted of the aforementioned offence will face harsher penalties.
I was involved in a collision where I was hit by a vehicle which had numerous defects and was being driven above the speed limit. When the driver was being sentenced, the judge passed comment that the punishment he handed down was as severe as he could impose as there was not an offence of causing serious injury by careless driving. He so said it was beyond him why one has not been created. Those people who seriously injure others by driving carelessly deserve tougher sentences.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Section 87 of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 creates a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving. This offence came into force on 28 June 2022, and carries a maximum penalty of 2 years’ imprisonment.
You can read the relevant section of the Act here: www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2022/32/section/87/enacted
