Petition Action

Reduce amounts and rights to payments for Ministers leaving office

Petition Details

We, the undersigned, call on the Government to amend Section 4 of the Ministerial and other Pensions and Salaries Act 1991 in relation to "grants", which are paid to Ministers who leave office, whether they resign or are removed by the Prime Minister.

Additional Information

We believe these grants - which are 25% of a Minister's annual salary - are effectively 'pay offs' for Ministers who resign or are removed.

The collapse of Boris Johnson's Government came about due to almost 40 Ministers quitting.

Under the above legislation, each is due to be paid an amount ranging from £5,593.75 to £16,876.25 - simply for quitting.

The only conditions are that they are under 65 and must not be re-appointed as Ministers within three weeks.
