Make socio-economic status a protected characteristic in the Equality Act
Protection from discrimination on the basis of socio-economic status should be added to the Equality Act. Social status is currently not protected under the Equality Act.
Some businesses operate in a way that discriminates on the basis of socio-economic status, such as only employing people who attended universities that are disproportionately attended by people from higher socio-economic backgrounds. By making socio-economic status a protected characteristic, these practices can be challenged through the courts.
