Petition Action

Review the lowering of GCSE and A-Level exam grades post-COVID.

Petition Details

Young people that sat their GCSE and A Level (and equivalent) exams in 2022 have experienced a tumultuous educational journey over the past 2 years. Unfortunately, it has been announced that exam results for GCSEs and A Levels taken in 2022 will be ‘substantially lower’ than in previous years.

Additional Information

Having experienced the same educational challenges as our peers in the 2020 and 2021 cohort, it comes as a surprise to many in the 2022 cohort that our exam results should be pegged lower than those in previous years. Furthermore, the delay in this announcement has added to concerns, as this has not left many young people suitable time to reassess their post-16 options should they not receive the grades they hoped for. We urge Parliament to review this issue to put these young people at ease.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you're concerned about how GCSE and A Level exams are going to be graded in 2022, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

Ofqual announced last year that for 2022 exam boards would set the grade boundaries based on a profile that reflects a midpoint between 2021 and pre-pandemic grading. Ofqual has said that this is likely to mean that results overall will be higher than in 2019, and not as high as in 2020: www.gov.uk/government/speeches/ofquals-approach-to-grading-exams-and-assessments-in-summer-2022-and-autumn-2021
