Expand the citizenship subject content on Human Rights
I call upon the Government to amend the citizenship programme of study, by including more specific content on Human Rights.
Currently, the citizenship subject content states “Human Rights” which is inadequate, and does not guarantee that specific Human Rights are being taught to children.
I would like the citizenship subject content to contain more specific content on Human Rights, to give more specific guidance for teachers.
This would ensure every child receives a fuller education about Human Rights. This additional content should include the Four Principles (non-discrimination (eg teaching about racism, disability), best interests of the child, right to survival and development and the right to opinion) from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
