Petition Action

Introduce a social tarrif for energy bills

Petition Details

replace the market-wide price cap with a discounted social tariff for vulnerable customers, and a relative tariff for the rest of the market – that caps the difference between the cheapest and most expensive tariffs a supplier offers.

Additional Information

It’s an injustice that the poorest households continue to pay higher energy costs because they’re on prepayment meters. This must end and a social tariff should be brought forward.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you want to see changes to how electricity price caps work, but we're not sure exactly what new arrangements you want to be put in place. It's not clear who you want to be eligible for the new "social tariff" you suggest, how this would be set, or how you want the new "relative tariff" to work.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
