Petition Action

Cover refurbishment costs of properties trashed by Housing Benefit Claimants

Petition Details

In the event that a tenant in receipt of housing benefits causes damage to their rental property, then the benefit system should cover the refurbishment

Additional Information

Private Landlords are discouraged from discriminating against tenants in receipt of housing benefits. Some tenants do not pay a deposit and do not look after their home, reducing it to a state where it's unfit to live in.
The cost of reinstating these properties falls on a Landlord who made a poor choice by accepting a bad tenant.
If the Government is forced to cover costs to bring these properties back to standard, then they may in future refuse to fund tenants who cause damage.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise. Decisions on whether to include a deposit for tenants, in order to cover any damages or arrears, are a matter for the landlord.
