Petition Action

End subsidies on food and drink for Members of Parliament.

Petition Details

Vote to change the law that allows MP to receive subsidies on food and drink, including alcoholic drinks, consumed by them in the Houses of Parliament.

Additional Information

As some of the highest paid State employees and given the current standard of living crisis being experienced by the population, Members of Parliament should not expect tax payers to subsidise their food and drink, particularly when schools are struggling to provide nutritious free meals to children living in poverty.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The House of Commons Catering service does not provide a subsidised service in the commercial sense of the word. Some venues make a profit, while in other venues the cost of providing the service does exceed the income received in sales due to the irregular hours and unpredictability of parliamentary business. The House of Commons publishes details of the cost of House of Commons catering services: www.parliament.uk/site-information/foi/transparency-publications/hoc-transparency-publications/catering-services/transparency-reporting-catering-services/

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is responsible for deciding on MPs' expenses and pay, including expenses for subsistence. IPSA is independent of both Parliament and Government. You can find out more about IPSA here: http://www.theipsa.org.uk
