Stop subsidising Palace of Westminster eateries and bars with tax payers money

Petition Details

To be eligible for free school meals, a household on universal credit in England must earn less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including benefits), regardless of the number of children in the family. It is unfair that MPs, earning around £87,000, have subsidised meals and drinks.

Additional Information

Given the cost of living crisis it is grossly unfair that MPs should have their meals and drinks subsidised by tax-payers. The government should remove the subsidy.

The House of Commons Catering service does not provide a subsidised service in the commercial sense of the word. Some venues make a profit, while in other venues the cost of providing the service does exceed the income received in sales due to the irregular hours and unpredictability of parliamentary business. The House of Commons publishes details of the cost of House of Commons catering services: www.parliament.uk/site-information/foi/transparency-publications/hoc-transparency-publications/catering-services/transparency-reporting-catering-services/
