Petition Action

Lower the energy price cap if wholesale prices fall after cap announcements.

Petition Details

The government should verify that there has been no drop in wholesale energy prices the day prior to the new cap starting.
Where there is a drop, the energy cap should be reduced in line with the percentage reduction.

Additional Information

The UK Gas price was 639.74 GBP/therm on the date of the energy price cap increase announcement and yet the day before its implementation on 30th September, the price was 350.95 GBP/therm.

Ofgem has allowed a 144% increase in consumer gas prices whereas The UK wholesale gas price on 1st October 2021 was 242.48 GBP/therm vs 350.95 GBP/therm in October 2022, representing a 45% increase in cost.

The Government should review the current cap in comparison to 2021 wholesale prices

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you want to see the Government's Energy Price Guarantee in some way linked to energy prices, but it's not clear if you want this Guarantee to be linked to electricity prices, or gas prices.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
