Petition Action

End rules allowing train companies to change timetables without consultation

Petition Details

We call on the Government to end rules allowing Southeastern and other train companies to change train timetables without consulting passengers. The Government must step in to stop cuts on the Bexleyheath, Sidcup and Woolwich lines and ensure future changes are subject to a binding consultation.

Additional Information

Current legislation allows train companies like Southeastern to impose cuts to services without consulting their passengers. These powers were granted by the Government to allow flexibility to timetables during the pandemic, but are now being abused by train companies looking to impose cuts to services.

The Government must acknowledge that these powers are being used beyond their intended purpose and act immediately to stop them being used to cut services.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you're concerned about changes to timetables, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

We could accept a petition calling on the Government to require train operators to consult on any changes to rail timetables, but it's not clear what you mean when you refer to a "binding consultation". Consultations are used to seek views on a set of proposals, rather than a vote on a particular outcome.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
