Petition Action

Change the limiting language of ‘disabled people’ to ‘people with determination’

Petition Details

Stop using the limiting language ‘disabled’ or ‘disability’ which reflects negative identity as powerless victims, such as an inability to progress or achieve.

Change the language to ‘people with determination’ which empowers and acknowledges their tenacity to progress and achieve in life.

Additional Information

The term ‘disability’ implies it is something caused by the individual, rather than society’s unwillingness to meet the needs of ‘people with determination’.

Rephrasing from ‘disability’ to ‘people with determination’ can provide an empowering mindset required for a barrier-free society. By avoiding limiting labels, the need for terminology pertaining to ‘disability’ will cease and likely lead to equality.

The UAE is at the forefront of changing this mindset with significant success:

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise. The Government and Parliament aren't responsible for decisions on language people choose to use.

We could accept a petition calling for the Government to change the terminology used in official Government documents, if that's something you'd like to see happen.
