The PM should be chosen by general election or a parliamentary vote.
The Prime Minister of the UK should be selected by the people of the UK (implicitly) as the outcome of a general election or (explicitly) via their elected representatives, through a parliamentary vote.
If the PM resigns during the term of parliament their successor should NOT be selected by the rank and file members of the PM's political party, since this does not provide a general mandate to govern nor stable government. General election or parliamentary vote ensure a broader representation of the political wishes of the population of the UK.
Political parties may choose party leaders as they wish, but whilst in government special consideration of the process or outcome may be needed.
