Petition Action

Have landlords prove where they spend kept deposits from previous tenants

Petition Details

Deposits are often wrongfully kept from good tenants. Then, that money is not spent on the property for repairs.

Landlords owe it to tenants to prove they have rightfully spent the kept deposit on repairs and generally what they say it is for. Proof in the form of receipts.

Additional Information

Make it compulsory for landlords to provide receipts for all repairs, cleaning services, painting etc that must be done due to the previous tenant. Have landlord provide receipts from credible businesses before claiming tenant deposits.

I took over my sisters tenancy for a property where they kept some of her deposit for repairs, and then the repairs were not done before moving in. They were not a priority either had I not of chased, they’d not of done them.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

If you believe that a deposit has been kept unfairly, you can appeal to the deposit protection scheme that was used. You can find out more about deposit protection schemes here: deposit-protection-schemes-and-landlords
