UK Maritime Patrol and SAR
The recent search for MH370 in the Far East highlights the gaping hole left in the UK's military when the Nimrod MR2 was scrapped and the replacement cancelled.
As an island nation we need an a maritime patrol aeroplane to not only perform Search & Rescue missions but also patrol the sealanes keeping them open for commerce and just as importantly for the movement of the Royal Navy's surface fleet and submarines. Without a dedicated maritime patrol aeroplane the Royal Navy's Trident submarines are at risk as are the new aircraft carriers. Additionally the UK is unable for the first time in decades to assist to search and rescue missions in the open oceans.
