Petition Action

Abandon voter ID OR expand the list of valid ID to avoid voter suppression

Petition Details

Voter fraud is extremely rare and the ID measures introduced under the Elections Bill are unnecessary and anti-democratic. Either withdraw the ID requirement or expand the list to include things like the CitizenCard and Post Office Pass Card to ensure equality of access to the democratic process.

Additional Information

The list of valid ID for voters is heavily biased away from a young/less affluent demographic and instead favours older, car-driving or passport-holding citizens. This is voter suppression and is wholly unacceptable in a democracy. It is a clear attempt to skew results in favour of the ruling party.
Disenfranchising a vast slew of voters is wrong.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The list of identity documents that will be accepted as identification at polling stations already includes the CitzenCard and other identity cards bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram. You can see the full list of identity documents that will be accepted here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/voter-identification-at-polling-stations-and-the-new-voter-card/protecting-the-integrity-of-our-elections-voter-identification-at-polling-stations-and-the-new-voter-card#annex-a-list-of-identity-documents-that-will-be-accepted

We could accept a petition calling on the Government not to implement voter identification at all, if that's what you want to happen.
