Petition Action

Allow vaccination of captive birds against avian influenza

Petition Details

Currently the vaccine is limited only for use in very specific cases (zoos) and within England only.

Avian influenza (AI) could now be classed as endemic. It has spread throughout the UK in wild and captive birds. The vaccine should be allowed for use in captive birds.

Additional Information

There are many private collections of birds in the UK which are run be dedicated groups of people.

Many of these collections hold valuable genetics and have been built up through years of dedication and hard work. Current policy is resulting in avoidable culling and loss of livelihood. There is no insurance against AI and no compensation for birds which die directly of AI or consequential loss from culling. Vaccine is the ONLY way out of living a life of unrelenting anxiety of loss.
