Ensure local councils are not allowed to use the term 'intentionally homeless'
Under the 1996 Housing Act: A person becomes 'homeless intentionally' if they fail to do everything to live in the accommodation available to them.
This legitimises a lack support for those in difficult circumstances. 'Intentionally homeless’ indicates that becoming homeless was their choice.
Behind homelessness lies a plethora of reasons - including addiction, mental or physical health issues, poverty, debt, destitution, unreasonable landlords, unfit accommodation, sanctions, isolation, lack of support etc. None of these make homelessness ‘intentional’.
This petition is to change the language & remove 'blame'. Homeless people must not be blamed for being homeless. My hope is to see people recognised and respected as victims rather than instigators of homelessness and its causes.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.
We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. We understand you'd like to change the term in the 1996 Housing Act from 'homeless intentionally' to something else, but we're not sure what you'd like that change to be,
You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
