Petition Action

Remove the religious exemption for animals to be stunned before slaughter

Additional Information

This is about animal welfare in the UK.

European regulations require animals to be stunned before they are slaughtered, but there is an exemption for slaughter by ‘a religious method’.

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1995/731/regulation/22/made

For meat to be considered Kosher under Jewish law or Halal under Islamic law, the animal must be conscious when killed.

Animal rights organisations such as the RSPCA believe this causes unnecessary suffering. A factsheet with a full explanation can be found by searching online for ‘RSPCA Religious Slaughter’.

We ask that the UK Government follows the courageous and principled lead shown by Denmark and other European countries and respect animal rights before this religious practice.

We want the government to remove this exemption, so that all animals are slaughtered to the same high standards.
