A bill to impose local authorities to provide free sanitary products
To propose a bill for the provision free sanitary products which would show non-partisan commitment to awareness raising and knowledge gathering on issues related to menstruation, including access to sanitary products and health information, and care when needed.
As a result of widespread protests on the basis that tax allocations should reflect the needs of society as a whole, the Treasury vowed to eliminate the Tampon Tax (a surcharge on the basis that sanitary products are non-essential items) by April 2018, but implementation was delayed until 2021. The Tampon Tax Fund that was meant to re-allocate the monies from the VAT towards charitable projects continues to be insufficient in view of year-on-year public spending cuts.
