Petition Action

Ban Blister Packs (MCCAs) until safety measures are enforced in law.

Petition Details

Enforce preventative measures in Law to avoid deliberate opening of medication capsules and to safeguard patient health. This can include colour marks within a capsule that smear when a capsule is opened, or internal locking mechanisms that snap when a deliberate attempt is made to open a capsule.

Additional Information

I work in a pharmacy and primarily produce Blister Packs (MCCAs) for patients using Omnicell kits for predominantly elderly patients.
However I came across a great danger to patient health, when I found out the ease of opening a capsule of Lansoprazole 30mg. Then I found out that this is easily done to other capsule medications that have two parts.
This can lead to direct manipulation of patient health by knowingly overdosing or underdosing, or inserting literally anything within a capsule

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about tampering of medication, but your petition calls for a ban on blister packs, when it appears that you are concerned about the ability for capsules of medication to be tampered with. We're therefore not clear exactly what you want to happen.

You could start a new petition explaining more clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
