Rapid chargers on Motorways – Now!

Petition Details

We urgently ask the Government to spend the £950m of the Rapid Charging Fund (RCF) so that motorway service stations have charging stations with a minimum of 6 rapid open access (non-Tesla) chargers by the end of 2023.

Additional Information

Chargers are mainly needed on long journeys. Nearly 95% of all car journeys are less than 100 miles. Many EV owners with home charging start with at least this range.

The current guidance for the RCF needs to be changed. It is currently very unambitious.

Also, consider the following suggestions.

Charging stations should have “smart” chargers that can share unused capacity between chargers

Charging stations should use batteries.
National Grid should contribute towards the cost of this.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

Your petition calls for action so that motorway service stations have charging stations with a minimum of 6 rapid open access chargers by the end of 2023. The Government has already committed to having at least 6 high-powered, open-access chargepoints (150-350 kW capable) at motorway service areas in England by 2023, so it's not clear what else you want the Government to do.

Your petition calls for the guidance for the rapid charging fund to be changed, but it's not clear how you want this guidance to be changed.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
