Petition Action

Protect the right to an LGBTQ-inclusive education

Petition Details

We want the government to ensure that all education is and will continue to be inclusive of LGBTQ+ identities and that this cannot be overturned because of trends and moral panics

Additional Information

There are current calls to repeal LGBTQ+ education in the curriculum. We want the right to an LGBTQ+ inclusive education given further legal protection so that it is not subject to moral panic and changes based on the mood of the current government or media. LGBTQ+ people have the right and the necessity to see their identities reflected in their education. LGBTQ+ inclusive education make society safer and fairer tor LGBTQ+ people, and must be protected.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about proposals for the removal of LGBTQ+ content from the national curriculum, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

Schools must ensure they comply with the relevant provisions of the Equality Act 2010, which introduced a Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) that requires public bodies including schools to:

- Eliminate discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Act,
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected
characteristic and people who do not share it,
- Foster good relations across all characteristics - between people who share a
protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

You can find out more about the Equality Act 2010 and schools here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/equality-act-2010-advice-for-schools

Maintained schools in England are legally required to follow the statutory National Curriculum, but curriculum content is not set out in legislation.

We have published the following petition, which you might like to sign:

Do not remove LGBT content from the Relationships Education curriculum: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/631529

We can accept petitions calling for changes to legislation and the national curriculum, but it would need to be clear what changes you wanted to be made.
