Reinforce Government legislation to increase maximum sentences for animal abuse
In 2019 the Government brought in a bill to increase maximum sentences for animal cruelty. Despite this, the sentences are not matching the crime. This bill needs to be reinforced.
People are committing the most awful acts of animal cruelty and 99.9% of the time the only punishment is a ban for a few years. The Government said they were increasing sentencing for animal abusers. I want the Government to look at the sentencing and reinforce this bill as it is not being carried out.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.
We understand that you are concerned about sentences for animal cruelty, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.
As you say in your petition, the Government has already introduced legislation to increase the maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty raised to five years. Decisions about sentencing for animal abuse offences are the responsibility of the courts, not the Government or Parliament.
We could accept a petition calling on the Government to introduce minimum sentences for animal cruelty offences, if that's what you want to happen.
