Require police accused of violence against women be named and suspended
Require police officers and staff be named and suspended when they are accused of offences of violence against women. There should only be exceptions where there are legitimate policing reasons for not naming police officers or staff.
The first report of its kind, published by National Police Chiefs' Council, reveals shocking data; of 1,539 accused officers, only 13 were dismissed.
We believe that there are unique and heightened barriers to women reporting alleged offences against police officers, and that this means these offences go underreported, due to victims' reluctance to come forward. Naming and suspending accused officers might encourage other witnesses to come forward. Public trust in policing must be restored.
