Government must negotiate with NHS unions and drop preconditions now
Fair pay for NHS staff
The NHS is in crisis with huge and growing staff shortages putting patient safety at risk. The RCN voted for its 1st nationwide strike in its 106 year history and the BMA has just held a 4 day strike after a 98% vote in favour.
In January 2023, President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, Dr Adrian Boyle said “We think somewhere between 300 to 500 people are dying as a consequence of delays and problems with urgent and emergency care each week.”
Staff have had a large real terms pay cut in the last 12 years and are exhausted from working under unprecedented pressure with no let up in sight. Record numbers are leaving the NHS, many for jobs with better pay and conditions with over 40,000 nurses leaving in the year ending June 2022 according to the Nuffield Trust.
