Petition Action

Update the Hunting Act so hunters can not easily fake reasons to hunt wildlife

Petition Details

The government must amend Schedule 1.9 and the ‘stalking and flushing out’ exemption of the Hunting Act to protect deer and other wildlife from being hunted using vague unsubstantiated reasons as excuses, and demand that evidence must be provided either pre or post-death of the animal for validity.

Additional Information

Hunters are using loopholes in UK law to fabricate reasons to kill deer and other wildlife for "sport". They are also deliberately misinterpreting the law in chapter 5 of the flushing and stalking out section of the Hunting Act, where they use different pairs of dogs over the course of the hunt. The deaths can be long-drawn-out affairs in which the animals can suffer greatly. There are no repercussions currently for them providing faux excuses, no research or evidence is needed to be provided

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about one of the exemptions in the Hunting Act 2004, but it's not clear how you want this to be changed.

Decisions about investigating and prosecuting alleged crimes, including those set out in the Hunting Act 2004, are a matter for the police and Crown Prosecution Service.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do. If you want the exemption in Schedule 1(9) to be removed, we could accept a petition requesting that. If you want this exemption to be amended, you'd need to be clear what amendments you want.
