Legislate to preserve the sovereignty of cash.
Whilst the current government states that any digital currency would ‘sit alongside, not replace cash’ and ‘there are no plans for cash to be replaced’ this does not protect against government u-turn or future governments.
For this reason, the government should bring about legislation to preserve the sovereignty of cash and prevent it from one day being replaced entirely by a digital currency.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
As you note in your petition, the Government has been clear that any digital currency would sit alongside, not replace, cash, and there are no plans for cash to be replaced.
Parliament cannot bind future Parliaments, so there is nothing the current Government can do to preserve cash that a future Government Parliament could not change.
