Request the EHRC to prioritise work on age discrimination and ageism
The Equalities and Human Rights Commission has no current projects specifically about discrimination against older people, unlike other protected groups. We have been at the bottom of the EHRC's priority list for years and we want the Government to discuss this glaring omission with them
Age discrimination is rife throughout society and despite years of representations from over 60s campaign group Silver Voices, no specific project is planned by EHRC to change this situation. For example, older people complain regularly about blatant and unchecked discrimination in the banking, insurance and travel sectors. And ageist and patronising language is used in much of the media about us, without reproach. Attempts to get the EHRC to address our concerns have been dismissed out of hand
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
The Equality and Human Rights Commission is operationally independent, so decisions about what inquiries and investigations it carries out are a matter for the EHRC, not the Government or House of Commons.
If you want the EHRC to consider an inquiry into age discrimination you should contact them directly: www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/contact-us
You could start a new petition calling on the Government to hold a public inquiry into age discrimination in certain sectors, if this is something you would like to see happen.
