Implement measures to support a 4-day work week
We want the Government to:
- Reduce maximum work week from 48 to 32 hrs by 2030
- Include a right to request a 4-day week in flexible working guidance
- Create a £100m fund for private sector transition
- Fully fund a public sector pilot
- Create a Working Time Council for coordination
Global studies have shown a 4-day, 32-hour work week could benefit workers, employers, and the UK. It can boost wellbeing and productivity, could help reduce gender pay gaps, and could cut the country's carbon footprint by 127 million tonnes annually.
In the 2022 pilot with 61 companies and ~3,000 workers, nearly all are keeping reduced hours.
Opinion polls show the British public support a change on working hours, with a significant majority supporting the move to a 4-day week.
