Petition Action

Change the "no persuit" rules in regards to motorbike thieves.

Petition Details

Motorbike theft is at ridiculous levels, there is mountains of evidence that police know these motorbike thief gangs operate but don't have the legal protection to act upon it.

Additional Information

Change the law, provide legal protection for police chasing these thieves who are otherwise free to commit more serious illegal acts on these stolen vehicles with little chance of being caught.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

Decisions on when to use tactical contact is an operational matter for individual Chief Officers, not the Government or Parliament.

We could accept a petition calling for a clear change to current laws. For example, to make it clear in law that police officers should not be regarded as being accountable for the driving of a suspected criminal who is attempting to avoid arrest by driving in a dangerous manner, if that's something that you'd like to see.
