Make it compulsory for schools to offer GCSE and A-Level Music.
We ask that it be made mandatory for schools to offer Music at GCSE, A-Level and as an option in the English Baccalaureate. The International Baccalaureate includes Music, however the English Baccalaureate doesn't and currently schools can opt not to offer Music at GCSE or A-Level.
During covid many people turned to music, but since then, we think that music has become overlooked and undervalued. In an age where awareness for mental health is high, and given the benefits that music can have on mental health, we think it should be prioritised more as a subject and made available to study for as many people as possible.
Many countries have strong, well-funded music programmes that are supported by a national belief in the value of music education. For example, music education thrives in countries like Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, where it often extends beyond the classroom to include extra-curricular musical instruction that is publicly subsidised.
