Add hedgehogs to Schedule 5 Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981
I have supported and rescued hedgehogs in my Norfolk garden for 11 years. The torture of a hedgehog in Holt in July 2023 is another in a long line of hedgehog persecution incidents in the UK. The
addition of hedgehogs to Schedule 5 would give a species in serious decline additional legal protection
Hedgehogs are listed as vulnerable in the GB IUCN red list.
They are subject to intentional and reckless killing and injury as well as damage and disturbance to their habitat. Recorded incidents of intentionally killing, taking or injuring hedgehogs are on the increase in a nation of animal lovers.
Adding hedgehogs to Schedule 5 Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 would provide additional legal protection for an iconic species in serious decline.
