Bring in mandatory GPS tagging for repeat offenders

Petition Details

GPS tagging offers a solution to preventing repeat offences, but implementation of such measures are at the discretion of the judiciary. This should instead be mandatory on repeat offences; the duration of tagging reflecting the amount of offences and tags applied as part of release from prison.

Additional Information

Crime statistics show that the number of reported car crimes have increased over the past two years: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/crimeinenglandandwalesappendixtables [Year ending March 2023, table 4a]

Around a quarter of convicts go on to reoffend, and many offenders have several convictions. Yet they are often being released without their location being monitored. GPS tagging technology could be extended to help prevent repeat offences.
