Stop those declared as wrongly convicted being charged for "bed and board"
Instruct the Home Secretary to take immediate steps to amend any legislation which gives the Prison Service power to levy such payments and, in the meantime, to exercise necessary discretion to place a moratorium on such charges.
The existing practice adds "insult to the injury" already sustained by an innocent person who has already been wrongly deprived of their liberty. It is bizarre that innocent people can be charged for such "accommodation costs" when no such charges are levied on guilty prisoners.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
People who have their convictions overturned are not required to pay the cost of their stay in prison, but the compensation they receive can be reduced to reflect savings on living expenses while in prison.
We could accept a petition calling on the Government not to reduce compensation for miscarriages of justice to reflect reduced living costs, if that's something you'd like to happen.
