Petition Action

Widen the parameters of the Titles Deprivation Act 1917 (TDA).

Petition Details

The Titles Deprivation Act 1917 (TDA) allows for peers to be removed only if somebody is an enemy of the country. This should be widened to include unsuitable person to trigger a vote in the house that would allow for peerages to be removed from such people.

Additional Information

The recent PM has caused unsuitable people to receive lifetime peerages. Under the current mechanism there is no mechanism by which the public can influence the removal of such people. This undermines and weakens our democracy. I feel that this new mechanism would improve public confidence in the Houses of Parliament.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The Titles Deprivation Act 1917 only applies to people who were on the wrong side in the First World War: www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Geo5/7-8/47

The House of Lords (Expulsion and Suspension) Act 2015 enables the House to expel or suspend a member by resolution, broadly along the lines of what you are suggesting: www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/14

The standing orders for the House of Lords set out when such a motion can be tabled: www.parliament.uk/business/publications/house-of-lords-publications/rules-and-guides-for-business/the-standing-orders-of-the-house-of-lords-relating-to-public-business/#expulsion-or-suspension

The use of the powers granted under the House of Lords (Expulsion and Suspension) Act 2015 are a matter for the House of Lords.
