NHS Fraud and Error - Approx 7bn a year

Health Minister to explain to Select Committee what measures he has in place to combat the fraud and errors.

According to various reports in the papers and tv Fraud is costing the NHS approx £5bn a year, with a further approx £2bn lost to financial errors.

The £2bn cost of errors relate to when the NHS makes overpayments by mistake to suppliers or staff.

Medical professionals claiming for work they have not done and overcharging by contractors.

Some professionals have been prosecuted.

NHS Protect with its local investigators oversaw approx 150 successful criminal cases. There were also approx 435 civil or internal disciplinary actions.

The amount lost to fraud alone could pay for nearly 250,000 new nurses.
