Publish an assessment of introducing a meat tax
Given concerns around sustainability and climate change, a tax on meat production and/or consumption deserves parliamentary scrutiny.
Peer-reviewed studies show a substantial contribution of meat consumption to CO2 equivalent emissions and we think these findings warrant assessment and parliamentary discussion.
A tax on meat production and/or consumption has potential to mitigate climate change. Research has shown that meat production significantly contributes to CO2 equivalent emissions. Implementation of a tax could act as a deterrent, reducing emissions.
Taxation could incentivise the agricultural sector to adopt more sustainable farming practices. The revenues generated from the tax could be reinvested in research for sustainable agriculture, or subsidise eco-friendly farming practices.
