To hold a public inquiry into the destruction of Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland
Concerning the manmade green blue algae crisis at Lough Leagh, an urgent public enquiry must be held.
This inquiry must establish:
1. Why did it happen and who is to blame?
2. A suitable method of prosecution and liability for those at blame (with particular emphasis on clean-up costs).
The UK's largest lake has turned into 'a toilet' (Sky News headline)
This manmade crisis has been allowed to happen due to slurry and other farm runoff, as well as human waste discharge (at record levels).
All this, despite providing drinking water to 40% of Northern Ireland's population.
People no longer feel safe consuming tap water, and many have lost faith in the accountability of politicians, farmers and NI Water.
If this happened on the UK mainland, London would be at a standstill.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.
Environmental policy in Northern Ireland is a devolved matter, so the UK Government and Parliament are not responsible for Lough Neagh.
If you want to raise this issue you could contact your MLA, or raise it with the relevant Northern Ireland department.
