Petition Action

Stop professional, semi-professional, amateur football teams from liquidation

Petition Details

All UK pro, semi-pro and amateur teams should be provided with a series of financial options from the Government and/or its own fanbase, to prevent liquidation.

Fan ownership should be an option. No more history wiped out by the Government.

This will stop repeats of Macclesfield Town, Bury.

Additional Information

If there are missed payments to the tax authorities, the fans should be consulted. Short term financing could be provided by the fanbase (cover any tax burden, ensure players and staff are remunerated), if existing ownership is failing.

Government to intervene and allow fanbase to buyout the club in extraordinary circumstances.

No more club histories to be torched by uninterested owners and government debt collectors. Each club has a history and this must be preserved, not liquidated.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you're concerned about the risks of football clubs entering liquidation, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

The Government has announced plans to create a new independent Regulator that will have responsibility for ensuring that clubs operate in a financially sustainable way, and that fans have a greater voice. This will include powers relating to financial distributions and the sale of football clubs, and the Government has said that the new regulatory system will be designed such that the likelihood of any financial distress is drastically reduced. You can find out more about the Government's plans here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/a-sustainable-future-reforming-club-football-governance/a-sustainable-future-reforming-club-football-governance

The new independent regulator will only be responsible for the top 5 tiers of the English men’s football pyramid, and we could accept a petition calling for the regulator to be given responsibility for all English football clubs, if that's something you'd like to happen.

If you'd like the Government to take a different action you could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
