Petition Action

Investigate use of variable speed limits near speed cameras on smart motorways.

Petition Details

The operational Authorities must stop use of temporary variable speed restrictions when there is no justification for it. They must not penalise the drivers for using the motorways. Only use them, where there is a justified need for it.

Additional Information

I have had personal experience on M6 and M62 where variable speed is used near the cameras in operation for a mile or so. Then national speed limit signs come up. There were no road works, incidents or congestions. It appears to be a money making scheme.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about the use of variable speed limits near speed cameras, but it's not clear if you want the Government to review this practice, or ban it.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
